Pearly Sergeant
Abudefduf margariteus
A rare Indian Ocean damselfish found only around two remote island outposts.

About
The Pearly Sergeant (Abudefduf margariteus) is a damselfish with one of the most restricted natural ranges you'll encounter in the saltwater hobby. It's known only from the waters around Mauritius and Réunion in the western Indian Ocean. That geographic exclusivity alone makes it a curiosity worth knowing about. In the wild, adults occupy shallow coral reef zones where moderate wave action keeps things lively, and that habitat preference gives you a clue about their hardy, active nature. Like other members of the sergeant family, it's an omnivore that will accept a varied diet without much fuss. Breeding behavior follows the classic damselfish pattern: pairs form for spawning, the eggs are laid directly onto a hard surface where they stick fast, and the male takes up guard duty. Fanning the clutch to keep it oxygenated and defending the territory with characteristic damselfish aggression. That territorial streak is worth keeping in mind when planning tankmates, as even a fish this size can make life difficult for quieter species. Given its limited wild distribution, this isn't a species you'll find at every shop, and its intermediate care rating reflects the need for a reasonably mature, well-maintained reef setup rather than any particular sensitivity.
