Barbour's seahorse (Hippocampus barbouri) is one of the more visually distinctive members of a genus already known for unusual appearances. It gets its alternate name, the zebra-snout seahorse, from the bold striped patterning that runs along its elongated snout. A feature that sets it apart from most of its relatives at a glance. In the wild it's associated with seagrass beds and rubble zones across the Indo-Pacific, where it anchors itself with its prehensile tail and waits for small crustaceans to drift within reach. Like all seahorses, males carry the young through pregnancy, a reproductive quirk that never gets old for hobbyists keeping them for the first time. In the aquarium this species sits firmly in intermediate territory. Not the hardest seahorse to keep, but definitely not a beginner's fish. Seahorses as a group have specific feeding demands, slow competitive reflexes at mealtime, and a sensitivity to water quality that rewards careful husbandry. Barbour's seahorse does best in a species-only or carefully curated setup with calm, slow-moving tankmates if any. Getting them reliably onto frozen mysis is the key early hurdle, and tank-bred individuals make that process considerably easier.
