About

The painted frogfish (Antennarius pictus) is one of the most accomplished ambush predators in the saltwater hobby, and once you've kept one, it's hard to go back to ordinary fish. Native to the Indo-West Pacific, this species turns up across a wide range of reef and rubble habitats, where it spends most of its time sitting absolutely motionless, blending into sponges, coral, and algae-encrusted rock. The camouflage is genuinely impressive. Individuals can display a wild range of colors and patterns, from creamy white to orange, yellow, brown, and near-black, and they can shift their coloration over time to match their surroundings. Like other frogfish, the painted angler uses a modified dorsal spine called an esca as a lure, twitching it to mimic small prey and then engulfing victims with one of the fastest strikes in the fish world. That enormous mouth can swallow prey approaching its own body size. In the aquarium, feeding takes some patience. Most specimens need to be weaned onto dead food like silversides or shrimp. They're best kept alone or with tankmates large enough to avoid becoming a meal, and they require a keeper who understands their specialized needs.
