The giant frogfish (Antennarius commerson) is one of the largest members of its family, capable of reaching sizes that dwarf most of its frogfish relatives, and it uses every inch of that bulk to become something other than a fish. This species is a dedicated ambush predator, spending its days sitting motionless on the seafloor or clinging to reef structures while its warty, highly variable body mimics sponges, rubble, or encrusting organisms with almost unsettling accuracy. Its coloration can range from bright yellow to deep red, brown, black, or mottled combinations, and individual fish can slowly shift their pigmentation over weeks to better match their surroundings. Like all frogfish, it wields a modified dorsal spine tipped with a fleshy lure, which it waves above its head to draw curious prey within striking range.
