The exquisite wrasse (Cirrhilabrus exquisitus) is one of the more colorful members of the fairy wrasse group, with males displaying a patchwork of pinks, greens, and reds that intensifies dramatically during their frequent sparring and courtship rituals. This species has a vast natural range across the Indo-Pacific, from the east African coast and as far south as Sodwana Bay in South Africa, all the way out to the Tuamoto Islands in the Pacific. In the wild, it tends to gather in moderately large, mixed-sex groups over rubble patches and low reef structures, often in areas with decent water movement. The fish feeds actively in the water column, picking off zooplankton as it drifts past. A behavior that translates well to aquarium life, where it will readily adapt to meaty prepared foods. An interesting wild association has been noted with the mushroom coral Heliofungia actiniformis, though the exact nature of that relationship isn't fully understood. Males are notably active social performers, regularly flaring and posturing at one another, which makes for a lively display tank. A 70-gallon or larger system with a secure lid, fairy wrasses are notorious jumpers, and peaceful tankmates will suit this species well. It sits comfortably at an intermediate care level.
