Kuiter's wrasse (Macropharyngodon kuiteri) is a compact, delicately marked species from a relatively limited stretch of the Western Pacific, ranging from New Caledonia down through the southern Great Barrier Reef to the waters off New South Wales, Australia. In the wild it keeps close to inshore environments, favoring zones where sand, rubble, and algae intermingle. The kind of patchy, textured habitat that gives small, active fish plenty of territory to pick over. The common name Black leopard wrasse hints at the bold spotting pattern that makes this fish immediately recognizable among reef dwellers. In terms of personality, it is a genuinely peaceful species that does well kept in a shoal, typically organized around a single male presiding over several females. That social structure can break down if you add multiple males. They will spar, so it is worth planning your group carefully before stocking. Despite belonging to a genus that includes some notoriously tricky wrasses, this species is considered a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are not complete beginners but are not far from it either. Give it enough open sandy substrate to exhibit natural foraging behavior, and it should settle in well and reward patience with years of active, engaging behavior.
