The lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) is the largest jellyfish species on the planet, with bells ranging from a few inches across in smaller individuals to over two feet in the giants found in the coldest northern waters. Those sprawling, hair-like tentacles, which can number in the hundreds and trail far beyond the bell, are what give this species its name, and they carry a sting capable of subduing fish, crustaceans, and smaller jellyfish. In the wild, lion's manes drift through the open waters of the cold North Atlantic and North Pacific, pulsing slowly as they hunt by passive contact rather than active pursuit. Keeping one is a serious undertaking. They require a specialized kreisel tank. A circular or cylindrical system designed to keep the animal suspended in a gentle current without letting it contact the walls and damage its delicate tissues. They absolutely cannot be housed with fish or most other invertebrates. Their lifespan is naturally short, typically under a year even under ideal conditions, so this is not a long-term display animal in the way most aquarium species are. Strictly an expert-level species, best suited to public aquaria or highly dedicated private keepers with the right equipment.
