The entire body is an intense, uniform magenta-purple with no breaks, no spots, no stripes, just a solid wash of color that looks almost unreal under reef lighting. In the wild it's associated with reef environments in the western Pacific, including waters within the Chinese Exclusive Economic Zone, where it tends to hide among rubble and coral crevices rather than swimming openly in the water column. That secretive streak carries right over into the aquarium. Dottybacks as a group have a well-earned reputation for being feisty far beyond their small size, and this species is no exception.
