The vermiculate wrasse (Macropharyngodon bipartitus bipartitus) is a small, active species native to the West Indian Ocean, where it moves through reef environments in loose social groups. Like many wrasses, this species organizes itself into a harem-style social structure. One dominant male leads a group of females, and that dynamic can play out in the home aquarium too. Keeping multiple males together is asking for trouble, as they'll square off and stress each other out, but a single male with several females works naturally and makes for an engaging display. The species is listed as beginner-appropriate, which is a pleasant surprise for a marine wrasse, though you'll still want a properly established reef system to give it the best chance. At under five inches fully grown, it doesn't need a massive footprint, but an adequately sized tank gives the group room to move and behave naturally. Being a carnivore, it will appreciate meaty foods and should adapt reasonably well to prepared diets over time. With a lifespan of two to three years, it's not the longest-lived fish in the hobby, but a healthy group kept in good conditions will reward you with plenty of activity and natural social behavior worth watching.
