Rusty Angelfish

The rusty angelfish (Centropyge ferrugata) is a dwarf angel from the western Pacific, found from Tanabe Bay in southern Japan down through Taiwan and the Philippines. In the wild it keeps to seaward rocky reefs and rubble zones, particularly where algae grows thickly. That algae-grazing lifestyle carries straight into life in the aquarium. Its coloring is warm and earthy: a deep reddish-orange base broken up by dark speckles and edged with blue along the dorsal and anal fins, giving it a look that's understated compared to flashier angels but genuinely attractive once you spend time with the fish. Like most Centropyge species, rusty angels can be solitary or live in small loose groups in the wild, and they tend to bring that same confident, slightly territorial energy into captivity. They're best described as intermediate in care. Not a fish for someone just getting started in saltwater, but not an especially demanding species either. They do well in reef-adjacent setups, though they may pick at corals as many dwarf angels will, so caution is warranted in a full coral reef tank. Keeping one well-fed with varied foods helps curb that tendency. A capable, personable little fish that rewards attentive keeping.
