The sargassum frogfish (Histrio histrio) is one of the most bizarre-looking fish you'll encounter in the saltwater hobby, and also one of the most fascinating. Unlike most frogfishes that park themselves on a reef and wait, this species spends its life drifting on open-ocean mats of sargassum seaweed, and its body is a near-perfect imitation of that habitat. Covered in fleshy tabs, fronds, and irregular patches of color that blend seamlessly into the weed. It uses its limb-like pectoral fins to clamber through the sargassum rather than swim, and it's an aggressive ambush predator that will attempt to eat anything it can fit in its mouth, including tankmates. That last point is worth repeating: sargassum frogfish are not community fish. They should be kept alone or only with similarly-sized, equally bold companions at minimum. Despite their unusual lifestyle and looks, they are considered a manageable choice for keepers who are new to frogfishes, as long as feeding is sorted out.
