The spotted hermit crab (Dardanus megistos) is one of the more impressive hermit crabs you'll encounter in the hobby, native to the Indo-West Pacific ranging from the Maldives through the West Pacific Ocean. In the wild it occupies shallow reef environments and rocky coastal areas, where it scavenges opportunistically and can grow large enough to require some seriously substantial shells. The body is a vivid red-orange, covered in white spots ringed with dark borders, and the claws are robust and noticeably asymmetrical. The larger of the two is used both for defense and for gripping food. This is not a small, unassuming hitchhiker crab. Dardanus megistos can reach a considerable size, and its personality matches its build: it's assertive, will readily investigate and harass tankmates, and has a reputation for being hard on snails and smaller invertebrates when it decides their shells look more appealing than its current one. For that reason it calls for some careful thought about tankmates and a well-planned setup with appropriately sized spare shells available. It's listed as an intermediate-care species, less because of demanding water requirements and more because managing its behavior and size in a community setting takes some experience and planning.
