The spotted lagoon jelly (Mastigias papua) is one of the few jellyfish species that has captured mainstream attention, largely because of its association with Palau's famous Jellyfish Lake, where millions of these animals migrate daily to follow sunlight across the water. That behavior points to something unusual: like reef corals, this species hosts symbiotic algae in its tissues, supplementing the nutrition it gets from capturing tiny zooplankton. The bell is translucent with scattered white or cream spots and can range from quite small to roughly the size of a softball, depending on conditions. In the aquarium, keeping spotted lagoon jellies is a serious commitment. They require a kreisel tank. A circular or cylindrical vessel with a smooth, consistent water flow that keeps the animals suspended without pressing them against walls or intakes. Standard aquaria with corners, filters, or powerheads will injure or kill them quickly. They cannot be kept with fish or most other invertebrates. That intermediate care rating is well-earned: it's less about water chemistry and more about having the right equipment and understanding how fragile soft-bodied animals behave in captivity. Life span is short, typically under a year, so most keepers source animals from dedicated jellyfish suppliers.
