The swollen-claw mantis (Neogonodactylus oerstedii) is one of the smaller mantis shrimp species found across the Western Atlantic, ranging from the Gulf of Mexico down through much of coastal Brazil. Despite the 'freshwater' tag that sometimes appears in catalogues, this is firmly a marine crustacean, typically found in shallow coastal habitats where it wedges itself into rubble, coral rubble, or burrows of its own making. Like all mantis shrimp, it's a smasher type, meaning those enlarged, club-like appendages are designed to deliver rapid, powerful blows rather than spear prey with pointed tips. The namesake swollen claws are the giveaway at a glance. In an aquarium setting, the swollen-claw mantis is best kept as a solo specimen. It will make short work of snails, small crabs, and pretty much any tankmate it can ambush or outmaneuver. That said, dedicated mantis keepers find them genuinely rewarding to observe: they're active, curious, and surprisingly personable once they feel secure in their burrow. An intermediate care rating is fair. Water quality needs to stay stable, and the tank setup needs to accommodate their burrowing instincts. Not a community tank candidate, but a fascinating species for someone ready to keep it on its own terms.
