Stellate Dragonet

The stellate dragonet (Synchiropus stellatus) is a small but visually complex reef fish from the Indian Ocean, ranging from the coastlines of East Africa out to Sumatra and various oceanic islands in between. In the wild it keeps to sheltered coastal reefs, picking its way across rubble patches and algae-covered rock rather than patrolling open water. That bottom-dwelling lifestyle carries straight into the aquarium, where you'll find it spending most of its time perched or slowly creeping along rockwork and substrate. Like its more famous cousin the mandarin dragonet, this species feeds almost exclusively on tiny live invertebrates in the wild, which is the central challenge of keeping one successfully. A well-established reef tank with a healthy population of copepods and amphipods is really the foundation any stellate dragonet needs, and without that steady micro-fauna base, getting one to thrive long-term is an uphill battle. Some individuals can be trained onto frozen foods, but that takes patience and isn't guaranteed. This is not a fish for a new or sparse setup, but for an intermediate keeper with a mature, well-stocked reef, it offers a genuinely interesting and relatively compact addition that spends its days exploring the lower reaches of the tank.
