The tiger tail sea cucumber (Holothuria thomasi) is one of the larger and more recognizable sea cucumbers available to reef keepers, named for the banded, striped patterning that runs along its elongated body. In the wild it is found in Indo-Pacific reef environments, moving slowly across sandy and rubble-strewn substrates where it processes sediment and organic material as it goes. That sand-sifting behavior is the main reason hobbyists seek it out. It can be a genuinely useful cleaner in a mature reef system, working through the sandbed and turning over detritus much the way a snail or urchin handles other parts of the tank. It is a peaceful animal with no interest in tankmates, but its sheer size means it needs a well-established aquarium with plenty of open substrate to roam. Care is rated intermediate, largely because sea cucumbers as a group require stable water quality and respond poorly to sudden changes. The bigger concern most reefers already know is the defense mechanism these animals carry. If badly stressed or injured, Holothuria species can release toxins that harm or kill fish and other invertebrates in a closed system. That risk keeps this one out of beginner territory, but for a prepared keeper it is a fascinating and functional reef resident.
