The yellow-fin flasher-wrasse (Paracheilinus flavianalis) is a compact, active reef fish from the eastern Indian Ocean, found along the coastal reefs, rubble-strewn seaward slopes, and even estuaries of Indonesia and northwestern Australia. Like other flasher-wrasses, males in this species are the showstoppers. They display intensified coloration and flared fins during courtship, performing rapid, looping swimming runs to impress the females in their group. In the wild, these fish live in small mixed-sex groups spread across a wide stretch of reef, with one or more males presiding over multiple females and juveniles. Younger fish tend to stay tucked into rubble and weedy cover until they gain some size and confidence, then begin moving in loose aggregations. In the aquarium, a small group replicates this natural social structure nicely, and watching a male flash his fins is one of the genuine pleasures of keeping this genus. At two to three and a half inches fully grown, they fit comfortably into modest reef setups and are considered a manageable choice even for less experienced saltwater keepers. They do appreciate plenty of live rock and open water column space to display and swim freely.
