Mediterranean Sea-fingers (Alcyonium palmatum) is a soft coral native to the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding European marine waters, including the shallow coastal zones around the Kerkennah Islands. In the wild it grows in colonies of fleshy, elongated lobes that branch outward in a hand-like arrangement, giving the species its common name. Coloration tends toward pale orange or pinkish tones, and the surface is studded with tiny polyps that extend when conditions are favorable, lending the colony a furry, textured appearance. Unlike many reef inhabitants that demand highly specific conditions, this species is considered a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are still building their experience with soft corals. It does not require intense lighting or powerful flow. Moderate levels of each suit it well, which makes it somewhat more forgiving than many of its SPS relatives. It is considered reef safe, posing little risk to neighboring corals or invertebrates. Because it originates from cooler European waters rather than tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, keepers should pay close attention to the temperature range their system maintains. This is not a coral you see in every shop, so when you do come across it, it offers a genuinely different look compared to the typical soft coral selection.
