Marbled Goby

The marbled goby (Pomatoschistus marmoratus) is a small, bottom-hugging fish native to a surprisingly broad stretch of coastline. From the Iberian Peninsula north through the Bay of Biscay, across the Mediterranean and into the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, with records even from the Suez Canal. In the wild it keeps close to inshore sandy shallows, and its mottled, earth-toned patterning functions as near-perfect camouflage against that kind of substrate. It's a fish you have to look for rather than one that announces itself. What makes this species interesting from a fishkeeping standpoint is its environmental flexibility. In the wild it moves between full marine, brackish, and even hyper-saline conditions, which hints at a reasonably tough constitution. Diet is straightforward for a carnivore: small crustaceans and insect larvae in nature, which translates well to frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp in the aquarium. Because it spends most of its time resting on the bottom rather than actively swimming, it needs open sandy areas to settle into rather than a densely packed rockscape. It's a rewarding choice for the intermediate keeper who appreciates subtlety over spectacle and wants a piece of European coastal habitat in their tank.
