The goldenbanded goby (Brachygobius aggregatus) is a small but characterful fish from Southeast Asia, ranging from the Mekong basin across to the Philippines. In the wild it occupies a wide variety of shallow habitats, slow-moving streams, irrigation canals, roadside ditches, and marshy areas, and is equally at home in fully fresh water or the brackish conditions of coastal estuaries. That tolerance for variable salinity is one of its most useful traits for the aquarist, giving you some flexibility in how you set up its tank. Dense plant growth is important, as this goby naturally gravitates toward heavily vegetated areas where it can pick off small invertebrates and zooplankton. Its compact size, topping out somewhere around 1.5 inches, means it works well in smaller, species-focused setups. The banded yellow-and-black patterning shared by gobies in this genus is where the common name comes from, and it gives the fish a vaguely bee-like appearance that makes it easy to spot among plants and substrate. Despite its somewhat specialized brackish reputation, this species is considered accessible for newer keepers willing to do their homework on water chemistry. It tends to be a benthic, bottom-hugging fish, so flat rocks or driftwood pieces to perch on will keep it comfortable.
