The Sabanus Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius sabanus) is a small but characterful fish native to brackish and freshwater habitats in Indonesia and Thailand. Like others in the bumblebee goby group, it wears a pattern of alternating dark and pale bands along its body, which gives the whole genus their common name. Despite a maximum size barely over an inch, these fish carry themselves with a confidence that belies their dimensions, and they will readily square off against tankmates of the same species over territory and hiding spots. This territorial streak means you need to think carefully about tank layout, providing plenty of caves, coconut shells, or dense decor to break up sightlines and give individuals their own corners to claim. Because they require brackish water conditions and a diet of meaty live or frozen foods, they are not the easiest fish to keep, and are generally better suited to hobbyists who have some experience dialing in water chemistry and sourcing appropriate prey items. That said, a well-planned species-only or carefully chosen brackish community setup can reward the effort with years of personality, since these little gobies can live upward of five years in good conditions. Their compact size makes even a modest aquarium workable for a small group.
