Found across the great river basins of mainland Southeast Asia and western island Southeast Asia, Datnioides microlepis goes by a handful of trade names. Fine scaled tiger fish, Indo datnoid, and Sumatran tiger fish among them. It inhabits slow, heavily structured environments like flooded forests and snag-filled rivers, where its bold pattern of six or seven dark vertical bars against a yellowish-grey body provides surprisingly effective camouflage among submerged branches. This is a large, long-lived fish that demands serious commitment: adults regularly exceed a foot in length and can live over a decade in well-maintained systems. Juveniles will eat zooplankton, but adults shift to a diet of fish, shrimp, crabs, worms, and insect larvae, so tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Anything small enough to swallow is a meal. Adults are not social with their own kind and tend to become aggressive toward similarly shaped fish, though they can coexist with robust, unrelated species in a spacious setup. Keeping them in groups of five or more can diffuse some of that tension, but singletons are the safer bet for most hobbyists. This species is protected in Thailand and is unfortunately sometimes mislabeled as the rarer and critically endangered D. pulcher in the trade, so knowing what you're buying matters.
