The striped scat (Selenotoca multifasciata) is a disc-shaped, deep-bodied fish patterned with bold vertical bars that set it apart from the spotted scats most hobbyists are familiar with. Native to the Indo-West Pacific, it ranges from Sulawesi and Australia across to New Caledonia, where it inhabits coastal estuaries, mangrove creeks, the mouths of rivers, and rocky shoreline pools. This is a fish that straddles worlds. Juveniles are often collected in lower-salinity or near-freshwater stretches, which is why young specimens adapt readily to brackish aquariums and are the ones most commonly available in the trade. One thing worth knowing before purchase: these fish carry a venomous glandular groove along the front of the body, so handle them carefully. They're also genuinely large fish at adulthood, which means the 150-gallon minimum tank size recommendation isn't a suggestion to ignore. On the behavioral side, striped scats are constantly on the move and bring real energy to a large brackish setup. Juveniles can be nippy toward slow-moving tankmates, so choose companions with that in mind. They're considered manageable even for newer brackish keepers, as long as space requirements are respected.
