The Atlantic Mudskipper (Periophthalmus barbarus) is one of those fish that genuinely makes you question the boundaries between aquatic and terrestrial life. Native to the West African coast from Mauritania down to Angola, it's at home in the muddy intertidal zones of mangrove swamps, estuaries, and coastal lagoons. Places where the water comes and goes and survival depends on adaptability. This fish doesn't just tolerate air exposure, it actively seeks it out, using its pectoral fins to prop itself up and move across mud flats in that characteristic skipping gait that gives the whole group its name. In the wild, adults hunt arthropods like crabs and insects right on the mud surface, and they're known to spawn in burrows they excavate themselves. In the aquarium, replicating that semi-terrestrial lifestyle is the real challenge and the real reward. A proper setup needs a meaningful land area with soft, damp substrate alongside the water section. As they mature, mudskippers become noticeably territorial toward tankmates and others of their own kind, so housing multiples requires careful planning and plenty of space. This species is best suited to a keeper who's genuinely excited by the oddity of what they're keeping, and willing to put in the effort a specialized paludarium demands.
