Found along the intertidal mudflats and rocky shores of India, this small mudskipper, Periophthalmus novemradiatus, is one of those fish that genuinely blurs the line between aquatic and terrestrial life. It regularly hauls itself out of the water onto exposed surfaces, breathing air directly through its moist skin and the lining of its mouth cavity. A trait that makes it more amphibian-like than most fish keepers ever encounter. In the wild it constantly moves between rock pools and open air, and a well-set-up brackish paludarium that includes emergent land areas will let it express exactly this behavior at home. At under four inches fully grown, it stays compact enough that a modest tank can work, provided there is meaningful territory above the waterline. What sets this species apart from many of its mudskipper relatives is its comparatively calm disposition. Skirmishes are far less common than with some of its cousins, which makes keeping small groups a more realistic option. Diet is flexible, as you would expect from an omnivore that forages across both wet and dry zones. The long potential lifespan means this is not a casual commitment, but for a keeper who wants something genuinely different, few fish deliver quite this level of personality.
