About

The bumblebee goby (Brachygobius nunus) is a pint-sized fish that makes a big impression, packing vivid yellow-and-black banding into a body rarely exceeding an inch. Native to coastal and low-lying habitats across a broad sweep of South and Southeast Asia, India, Myanmar, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, and Borneo, it turns up in mangrove forests, tidal creeks, and estuaries, though it can also be found in freshwater stretches. That flexibility in its natural range is worth noting, but in the aquarium it generally does best with at least some salt in the water. Despite its small footprint, this species has a personality that fills a tank. Males in particular can be feisty toward one another, so the layout matters. Broken sightlines, caves, and hiding spots help keep things civil in a group. Its carnivorous appetite means it largely ignores prepared dry foods, so live or frozen fare like bloodworm and brine shrimp is the reliable way to keep it happy. Lifespan can reach five to eight years with proper care, which is genuinely impressive for a fish this small. It's an intermediate-level species rather than a beginner fish, mainly because of the brackish water requirements and its sometimes picky feeding habits.
