The bumblebee fish (Brachygobius xanthozonus) earns its name from the bold yellow and dark brown banding that wraps its small, stocky body from nose to tail. Native to the coastal rivers and estuaries of Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, this species naturally inhabits brackish and freshwater environments where tidal influence shifts water chemistry regularly. In the aquarium, it tends to stake out a favorite cave, rock, or bottom corner and defend it with surprising confidence for a fish that rarely exceeds an inch and a half. It can get pushy toward its own kind, so keeping a group of five or more helps spread that territorial energy around rather than concentrating it on one unfortunate tankmate. As a strict carnivore, it generally ignores dry foods and does best on small live or frozen fare like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia. It moves in the deliberate, bottom-hugging style typical of gobies, using its fused pelvic fins to perch on hard surfaces. This species rewards keepers who take time to understand its brackish preferences and feeding quirks, making it a satisfying project fish rather than a straightforward beginner choice. With proper care, bumblebee fish can live a surprisingly long time for their size.
