Freshwater Moray

The freshwater moray (Gymnothorax tile) is one of the few muraenids that regularly turns up in the freshwater and brackish hobby, and it carries all the visual drama you'd expect from a moray in a surprisingly accessible package. Native to estuaries and river mouths from India across to the Philippines and down into Indonesia, it spends its life in murky, muddy shallows where rivers meet the sea, typically in depths of just a meter or two. In coloration it shows small pale spots scattered across a darker body and head. A useful identification point, since it's sometimes confused with Gymnothorax polyuranodon, which has the opposite pattern: large dark blotches on a lighter background. Temperament is the main thing to think hard about before buying. This is an aggressive, highly predatory fish that will target tankmates of surprising size, so most keepers do best housing it alone. Groups can work in very large, well-structured setups where each individual has its own bolt-hole to retreat to, but that takes planning and space. Captive breeding has not been documented, so all specimens in the trade are wild-caught. Despite its predatory nature, it's considered manageable even for less experienced keepers who go in with realistic expectations about its diet and compatibility.
