Silver Mudskipper

The silver mudskipper (Periophthalmus argentilineatus) is one of those species that makes you question what a fish actually is. Found across a vast range from the East African coast and Red Sea all the way east to Samoa, it lives primarily in intertidal mudflats, mangrove swamps, and estuarine shallows. Hauling itself out onto mud banks and roots using its pectoral fins as makeshift limbs. In the wild it can remain out of the water for over a day and a half, as long as its skin stays moist, which tells you a lot about how this fish needs to be kept. An aquarium setup should include a large exposed land area with soft, damp substrate for burrowing, shallow brackish water, and a secure lid. These fish will absolutely escape if given the chance. They are active, curious, and genuinely entertaining to watch as they go about their terrestrial routines. Diet in the wild includes worms, crustaceans, and insects, and that carnivore preference translates easily to captivity. Despite their unusual requirements, they are surprisingly forgiving for a specialist species, and their long lifespan means a well-kept individual can be a long-term companion.
