The African Moony (Monodactylus sebae) is a large, disc-shaped brackish fish with a flattened silver body and tall dorsal and anal fins that give it a distinctive diamond silhouette. In the wild it ranges along the West African coast from Cape Verde down to Angola, living primarily in estuaries, lagoons, marshes, and the lower reaches of rivers, though it ventures into fully marine conditions in shallow coastal bays and harbors as well. Wild schools can number in the hundreds, and that social nature carries directly into aquarium life. Individuals kept in small groups tend to be shy and subdued, but a larger school brings out confident, active behavior that makes the tank come alive, especially around feeding time. They're omnivores that naturally take fish, shrimp, and zooplankton, and they will not hesitate to eat any tankmate small enough to fit in their mouths, so choose companions accordingly and aim for similarly sized fish. Because they grow to nearly ten inches and need the security of a group, a large system is genuinely necessary rather than just advisable. Their brackish requirements and eventual size put them in intermediate territory, but for a keeper with the right setup they're a rewarding and long-lived species.
