The red-striped toadfish (Dichotomyctere erythrotaenia) is a small puffer from the tidal waterways of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, where it moves between brackish estuaries, mangrove stands, and freshwater stretches of rivers depending on conditions. It's particularly well associated with mangrove habitats, and setting up a tank that reflects that murky, root-filled environment tends to bring out the best in this species. The vivid red striping along its body makes it one of the more visually interesting small puffers available to hobbyists, and at two to four inches it stays a very manageable size. Like all puffers, it's a dedicated carnivore with the beak-like teeth the family is known for, so a varied diet of meaty foods and hard-shelled invertebrates to keep those teeth worn down is important for long-term health. It carries the typical puffer personality, curious, interactive, and more than capable of nipping fins, so tankmate choices need careful thought. This isn't really a community fish. Most keepers do best housing it alone or with robust, similarly-sized species that can handle an occasionally pushy neighbor. With attentive care it can live a decade or more, making it a worthwhile long-term project for intermediate keepers comfortable managing brackish conditions.
