Smallscale Archerfish

The smallscale archerfish (Toxotes microlepis) is the species in its genus most likely to be found deep in freshwater river systems, well away from the brackish estuaries where its relatives tend to congregate. It ranges across major river drainages in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, as well as the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it hugs shorelines beneath overhanging vegetation. That habitat preference tells you everything about its feeding strategy: it waits patiently in cover, then spits a jet of water to knock terrestrial insects off low-hanging branches and leaves. In the wild it also picks off zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and small crustaceans, so it is not a picky eater by nature. In an aquarium it adapts readily to meaty prepared foods, though offering live or frozen invertebrates keeps it engaged. Despite its predatory lifestyle it is a genuinely peaceful fish toward tankmates of similar size, though small fish that fit in its mouth are fair game. Its reputation for being the more freshwater-tolerant archerfish makes it somewhat more practical to keep than some relatives, and its care level is reasonable even for newer brackish keepers willing to do a bit of research on salinity management.
