Found along the rocky southwestern shoreline of Lake Tanganyika, Altolamprologus calvus is one of the most distinctively shaped cichlids in the hobby. The body is compressed to an almost blade-like thinness, which is no accident. This fish makes its living by wedging into narrow crevices to raid the eggs and fry hiding inside. Seen head-on, it practically disappears, and that profile works just as well for avoiding predators as it does for sneaking up on prey. The thick, serrated scales add another layer of defense that tankmates occasionally discover the hard way. Several color forms circulate in the hobby, including black, white, and yellow variants, and these morphs should be kept separate to avoid hybridization. In a community setting, calvus is less aggressive than its predatory reputation might suggest. It generally ignores fish too large to eat and pairs well with Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Cyprichromis, and Tanganyikan synodontis catfish. It does tend toward shyness, so boisterous tankmates can push it into hiding. This is not an ideal first cichlid. Newly imported fish are sensitive to water chemistry shifts, and the species grows and breeds slowly, asking for patience from the keeper. Tank-raised individuals are noticeably more resilient, but stable water conditions matter throughout this fish's long life.
