Ndobhoi Cichlid

Chalinochromis sp. ndobhoi is one of those species where the taxonomy hasn't caught up with the hobby. It remains formally undescribed but is actually the most regularly available member of its genus in the aquarium trade, sometimes listed under the variant spellings 'ndoboi' or 'ndobnoi'. It hails from a fairly narrow stretch of Lake Tanganyika's eastern Tanzanian shoreline, centered around the rocky coastal habitats between Bulu Point and Kasoje, plus nearby Karilani Island. Visually it's straightforward to separate from its two described relatives: look for two or three rows of irregular, dark, horizontally-oriented blotches along the body, with the uppermost row often sitting entirely within the dorsal fin rather than on the flank itself. This pattern differs clearly from the solid stripes of C. popelini and the unmarked flanks of C. brichardi. Behavior-wise, males grow territorial as they mature, so tankmate selection matters. Other Chalinochromis are a hard no due to hybridization risk, and mixing with Julidochromis is best avoided except in very large setups. Breeding is genuinely rewarding: pairs are biparental cave spawners, with the female tending eggs and the male guarding the surrounding territory. Parental care runs for weeks post-hatching, and in spacious tanks a multi-generational colony can develop naturally. Despite the territorial temperament, the species is considered manageable for keepers with some cichlid experience.
