Salvinia (Salvinia natans) is a small floating fern native to a broad stretch of Europe and Asia, found drifting across still and slow-moving freshwater bodies from the Netherlands and Germany through to parts of Asia. Despite being a fern rather than a true moss, it gets called floating watermoss or eared watermoss in the hobby, and once you see it up close you can understand why. The paired oval leaves have a distinctly furry texture thanks to tiny water-repelling hairs arranged in a characteristic eggbeater shape on the surface, which help it stay buoyant and shed water. A third, submerged leaf is modified into root-like strands that dangle into the water column and absorb nutrients directly. In the aquarium, Salvinia spreads quickly across the surface under decent light, forming a natural canopy that diffuses bright overhead lighting, reduces surface agitation impact, and gives nervous fish or young fry a sense of cover. It is a genuinely forgiving plant for newer keepers, no substrate needed, no CO2 required, and it pulls nutrients from the water column, which can help keep algae in check. Just thin it regularly so it does not block all light to plants below.
