The neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is probably the single most recognizable freshwater fish in the hobby, and for good reason. That vivid blue lateral stripe running from nose to tail, paired with a bold red band from the midsection to the caudal fin, isn't just decoration. Research suggests the stripe may actually function as a predator-confusion device in the blackwater and clearwater stream tributaries of the Solimões River in South America, where wild neons live among dense tannin-stained waters. The stripe becomes less visible in those dark conditions except at specific viewing angles, which may project disorienting mirror images at the water surface. In the aquarium, neons are genuinely forgiving and a sensible first fish for newer keepers, though they deserve more thought than they sometimes receive. Keep them in groups of at least eight to ten. A larger, well-mixed school produces far more natural behavior than a handful of fish hugging a corner. They pair beautifully with other small characins, peaceful catfishes, and small cichlids. One practical note worth taking seriously: neon tetra disease, caused by a microsporidian parasite, is essentially untreatable once advanced, so inspect stock carefully before buying and avoid any fish showing white patches or sitting apart from the group. Long-term commercial breeding has also introduced some quality variation, so choosing healthy, well-formed specimens matters.
