The mystery snail (Pomacea bridgesii) is one of the most popular freshwater invertebrates in the hobby, and for good reason. Native to Bolivia and the western Amazon Basin, this apple snail spends its time grazing along the substrate and glass, though it will cheerfully wander every corner of the tank when the mood strikes. What sets it apart from many other apple snail species is its preference for algae and decaying plant matter over healthy live plants, making it a genuinely useful tank cleaner rather than a liability in planted setups. Shell colors range from the classic yellow and brown to ivory, purple, blue, and nearly black, and the body itself can vary just as much, giving collectors plenty to chase. One quirk worth knowing: mystery snails breathe air and will periodically extend a long siphon tube to the surface while staying mostly submerged. This means a tight-fitting lid with some air gap is important, both to keep the water humid enough and to prevent escapes. They are completely peaceful and won't bother fish or shrimp, though fish that nip fins can stress them. At a compact adult size and with forgiving water requirements, mystery snails are a natural fit for beginner tanks and a reliable choice for community setups of almost any experience level.
