The rummy nose tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri) is probably one of the most recognizable small tetras in the hobby, thanks to the bold red flush that covers the entire head and extends past the gill covers. A key detail that separates this species from two lookalikes sold under the same common name. The tail adds to the effect: a black-and-white banded caudal fin gives the fish a two-toned look that becomes genuinely impressive when a large group moves together in sync. Native to the blackwater rivers of the Negro and Meta basins in South America, it's accustomed to soft, warm, acidic conditions, and tends to show its best color when water quality matches that natural profile. This is a mid-water schooling fish, and keeping it in a group of at least ten is not optional. Smaller numbers produce stressed, washed-out fish that rarely behave naturally. In a proper-sized shoal they move with a cohesion that few other tetras match. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized; this species pairs beautifully with other South American characins, Corydoras, Apistogramma, and small loricariids. It's also a well-known companion fish in discus setups. Breeding is possible but requires a dedicated tank and some patience, putting this one in the intermediate care category.
