Otocinclus

About

Otocinclus (Otocinclus vittatus) is a small armored catfish from South America, where it ranges across major river systems including the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná basins, typically inhabiting shallow, plant-rich waters with plenty of biofilm and algae to graze on. Adults max out at just under two inches, with a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body marked by a dark lateral stripe running from snout to tail. They're peaceful to a fault and make excellent companions for other small, calm species. In the aquarium, they spend much of their time suctioned to surfaces, glass, broad plant leaves, driftwood, equipment, rasping away at algae and biofilm with their specialized mouths. Don't be surprised to find one motionless on the front panel for hours; this is perfectly normal resting behavior. When startled, though, they bolt around the tank with impressive speed and can crash into things, so a well-covered tank is a good idea. One practical note: this genus has facultative air-breathing ability, which helps it cope with lower-oxygen conditions in the wild. Despite their small size and peaceful nature, Otocinclus aren't quite beginner fish. They're sensitive to poor water quality and do best in a mature, stable setup with established algae growth.
