Found in the Rupununi River basin of Guyana, Centromochlus reticulatus is a diminutive South American catfish belonging to the family Auchenipteridae. A group endemic to the neotropics and recognizable by their lack of bony body plates, small adipose fin, and eyes covered by a layer of adipose tissue rather than a distinct orbital rim. In the trade it occasionally surfaces under the name 'purple oil catfish', which gives you a sense of the subtle iridescent quality that makes it worth seeking out despite its small adult size. Behavior-wise, this is a thoroughly peaceful fish, but it has a strong social streak. Keeping a group of at least eight individuals is the way to go if you want to see natural, relaxed behavior rather than fish that spend most of their time hidden. It mixes well with other small, calm community species. One of the more unusual aspects of this species is its reproductive biology: like other auchenipterids, it practices internal insemination, and females can retain both unfertilized eggs and sperm internally until conditions are right to trigger fertilization. There is no parental care after eggs are deposited. Its modest size and beginner-friendly temperament make it an accessible choice for a well-planned small community tank.
