Stick Catfish (Acestridium dichromum) are small loricariids from the upper Orinoco and Negro River basins in South America, where they inhabit soft, acidic blackwater environments. The name says it all. These fish have evolved a remarkably elongated, slender body that mimics a piece of wood or a twig, making them nearly invisible among leaf litter and submerged branches. The species is dichromatic, meaning individuals can show two distinct color forms, typically a darker and a lighter phase, which adds to the camouflage effect depending on their surroundings. In the aquarium, they tend to be secretive and slow-moving, spending a lot of time motionless and pressed against driftwood or tucked into dim corners. That behavior is natural and healthy, not a sign of stress. Because they come from soft, acidic blackwater rivers, keeping the water chemistry reasonably close to their native conditions will make a real difference in how settled and long-lived they are. They stay small enough for a modest-sized setup, though their specific water preferences and somewhat cryptic nature make them a better fit for a keeper who already has some experience with South American blackwater species. A well-decorated tank with plenty of driftwood and dim lighting brings out the best in them.
