Aree's Clown Loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki) is one of the smallest members of the loach family Botiidae, and what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character. Native to the Chao Phraya, Mekong, and Maeklong river systems of Southeast Asia, it inhabits everything from medium-sized rivers to flooded fields and muddy standing water. The body pattern is distinctive: a pale yellowish-white base crossed by a dark midlateral stripe on each flank, a middorsal stripe, and numerous vertical bars connecting the two and reaching down toward the belly. A bolder, more complex arrangement than its closest relative, A. nigrolineata. This species is diurnal and genuinely social, forming complex group hierarchies that produce some fascinating behaviors. Keepers report a "shadowing" routine where younger fish swim flank-to-flank mimicking larger individuals, audible clicking during excitement, and periodic bouts of the so-called "loachy dance". A restless group swim around the tank perimeter. Finding individuals wedged sideways into decor or lying flat is normal resting behavior, not cause for panic. Groups of at least six are recommended, and ten or more brings out the best behavior. While broadly manageable for newer keepers, caution is warranted with slow-moving or long-finned tankmates, and larger aquaria genuinely improve outcomes. Commercially bred stock is widely available, though private spawning remains extremely rare.
