Kuhli Loach

The kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) is one of those fish that new keepers buy with excitement and then spend the next month wondering if it's still alive. This slender, eel-like loach has warm yellow-orange skin banded with dark brown, and it's built low to the ground with tiny fins that make it look more like a snake than a fish. In the wild it turns up across a wide range of Southeast Asian habitats, from hill streams to slow, tannin-stained forest canals and peat swamps, which tells you something about how adaptable it is. In the aquarium it's firmly nocturnal, emerging under the cover of darkness to sift through the substrate for anything edible, then vanishing again before the lights come on. This is a species that genuinely needs companions of its own kind. Kept solo it stays hidden almost indefinitely, but a group of five or six will noticeably embolden the whole bunch. Fine-grained substrate is worth prioritizing since they love to burrow and forage. Caves, driftwood tangles, and dense plant cover all help them feel secure. A forgiving choice for beginner setups, though a tight-fitting lid matters. These fish are accomplished escape artists.
