The sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is a small but genuinely fascinating fish from the slow and still waters of Southeast Asia. Flooded ditches, peat swamps, and densely vegetated ponds stretching from Thailand and Laos down through Indonesia. It is one of three species in the genus Trichopsis, and can be identified by its compact size and a solid dark stripe running along the midline of the body, with a second row of blotches forming a broken stripe above it. What truly sets this fish apart is its ability to produce audible sounds using a mechanism found nowhere else in the family. Specialized tendons and muscles in the pectoral fins that work something like plucked strings, generating croaks and purrs during courtship and territorial disputes. Research suggests these acoustic signals help fish size each other up and resolve conflicts without physical contact, which is a remarkable adaptation for something you can keep in an 11-gallon tank. In the aquarium it is peaceful but easily overwhelmed, so tankmates should be small and similarly non-assertive. Think Boraras, Microdevario, or Pangio loaches rather than anything boisterous. It is an obligate air-breather, so a surface gap and a tight-fitting lid are both important. Caution is warranted if keeping it with small shrimp, as some individuals will predate them. Overall a rewarding choice for patient, detail-oriented keepers who enjoy observing nuanced behavior.
