Dwarf hygrophila (Hygrophila polysperma) is one of those plants that earns its place in almost every planted tank conversation when the topic turns to easy, reliable greenery. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it has naturalized across parts of Europe and other regions, which gives you a sense of just how adaptable this plant is. In the aquarium it produces upright stems with pairs of small, oval leaves that range from pale green to a warmer olive, depending on light levels. Under brighter conditions the foliage can take on reddish or pinkish tints, making it more visually interesting than its plain description might suggest. Growth is genuinely fast when conditions are reasonable, so it works well as a background or midground filler and gives you cuttings to replant or trade on a regular basis. Because it tolerates a wide range of water conditions and does not demand CO2 supplementation or intensive fertilization, it is widely considered one of the most forgiving choices for newcomers to planted tanks. It competes well enough with algae simply by growing quickly and taking up nutrients efficiently. Trim it often, replant the tops, and it will essentially look after itself.
