The Siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) has earned a genuine reputation in the planted tank hobby for doing a job that many so-called algae eaters conveniently skip. Native to fast-moving hill streams and river rapids across Thailand and into Indonesia, this fish spends its natural life grazing on the fine films of algae, periphyton, and plant matter that coat rocks and substrate in clear, oxygen-rich water. That bottom-dwelling, grazing lifestyle translates directly into aquarium behavior. Give it a well-oxygenated tank with some current and it will get to work. The fish itself is fairly plain to look at: a torpedo-shaped silver body with a bold, continuous black stripe running from the nose all the way through the tail. That unbroken stripe, extending into the caudal fin, is one of the more reliable ways to tell it apart from similar-looking imposters that get sold under the same name. Temperament is genuinely peaceful, and a group of them coexists without much drama. Because they come from fast, clean water in the wild, they do best when conditions reflect that. Good filtration and water movement matter here. At up to about six inches and active by nature, they need real swimming room to thrive long-term.
