The dwarf chain loach (Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki) is one of the more characterful small loaches available in the hobby, and unlike most of its relatives it is genuinely diurnal, spending its day actively schooling in the mid and lower water column rather than hiding until the lights go out. It comes from the river systems of Thailand and surrounding regions, where it inhabits everything from large flowing rivers to flooded fields and slow-moving pools. The patterning is distinctive: a pale yellowish body crossed by a network of dark lateral and dorsal stripes connected by vertical bars, giving the ladder or chain appearance that earns it most of its common names. Sociality is not optional with this species. It needs to be kept in a group, ideally ten or more. Smaller groups can lead to stress, bullying within the group, and the occasional nipped fin on tankmates. With adequate numbers, though, the fish direct most of their social energy toward each other, and you get to observe some genuinely fascinating behaviors: the shadowing of older fish by younger ones, audible clicking sounds during excitement, periodic group laps of the tank often called the loachy dance, and the occasional greying-out of color during dominance interactions. Breeding in home aquaria is exceptionally rare. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards keepers who do their homework.
