The Amur False Gudgeon (Abbottina rivularis) is a small but feisty cyprinid from eastern China, Korea, and Japan, where it naturally occupies shallow, slow-moving rivers and lakes with sandy or muddy substrates. It has since been introduced well beyond its native range, including the Mekong basin and parts of Central Asia, a fact that carries real weight for hobbyists. This fish should never, under any circumstances, be released into non-native waters. Its invasive potential is genuinely concerning, and responsible ownership matters here more than with most species. In the aquarium, the Amur False Gudgeon is not a good fit for a typical community setup. It feeds with real gusto and can easily push around slower, more timid fish at mealtimes. It does best alongside robust, similarly-sized cyprinids, think Dawkinsia, Barilius, or larger Devario and Rasbora species, as well as confident bottom-dwellers like Botia, Garra, or Schistura. Given its space requirements and specific social dynamics, it is better suited to a keeper with some experience rather than a beginner. Taxonomically, it belongs to the tribe Gobionini within Cyprinidae, a grouping backed by molecular research that places it alongside genera like Gobio and Pseudogobio.
