The Chinese snakehead (Channa asiatica) is a compact but formidable predator native to humid, forested waterways across central China, Taiwan, Hainan Island, and into the Red River basin of northern Vietnam, with reports from Japan and Sri Lanka as well. Like all members of the snakehead family, it breathes atmospheric air using paired suprabranchial chambers, and in the aquarium you will regularly watch it rise to gulp air at the surface. So a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable. Visually, it stands apart from close relatives by its brownish body crossed with vertical dark bars and scattered white spots across both the body and fins, a pattern that makes it one of the more visually interesting channids available. It also lacks pelvic fins entirely, a trait shared by only a handful of species in the genus. Behaviorally, juveniles can coexist in groups, but once a dominant pair establishes itself the others become targets, so most keepers end up housing a bonded pair on their own. That pair can be genuinely rewarding to breed. They embrace like gouramis, scatter eggs at the surface, and both parents guard the eggs and fry with real dedication. Diet is carnivorous, centered on meaty foods, and this species suits an intermediate keeper who respects its predatory nature and space requirements.
