Burmese Zebra Loach

Found in clear mountain streams across India and Myanmar, the Burmese zebra loach (Botia histrionica) goes by several trade names including golden zebra loach and Burmese loach. A reflection of how widely it moves through the hobby despite some identity confusion at the point of sale. Young fish display five solid dark bars on each flank, but as adults the pattern shifts depending on which river drainage the fish originates from. Ayeyarwady specimens tend toward a yellowish body with bars that may partially break into spots, while Salween fish are paler and the bars fragment more noticeably. This variability means you may see noticeably different-looking fish sold under the same name. In the aquarium this loach rewards keepers who take its social needs seriously. A group of at least five or six is genuinely necessary. Solitary fish can become withdrawn or nippy toward similarly shaped tankmates, and small groups often see one dominant individual stress the others. Keep it with peaceful, open-water cyprinids and other botia species rather than slow, long-finned fish, which risk having their fins nipped. Expect some fascinating group behaviors: audible clicking when excited, occasional bouts of restless laps around the tank perimeter, and fish that may rest wedged sideways between decor in a way that looks alarming but is completely normal. An intermediate-level species that is very rewarding once settled.
